THE THOROUGHLY MODERN BAT

The Baby Bat to my way of seeing things was looking somewhat outdated- time to discard the nappies, and although its origins were from a hybrid Mini Simmons designed in the late forties, CLOSE UP OF TAIL FROM THE BOTTOMit still however, felt really good under foot for all that tried it . Regardless there were aspects that I thought it needed to unshackle. It is not uncommon for a surfboards model name to refer to its tail shape, particularly one as dynamically different as the Bat tail. There are in fact many unique aspects to this previous model beside its actual tail shape worthy of comment.

Going forward the Modern Bat has taken on a more modern hybrid profile exiting the pronounced S deck and with some added tail lift and tail width in order to bring it up to date with what is currently on the market. In addition I designed in the obligatory concave through the belly where previously it was an old styled rolled vee with softish high rails. Also had to include an on the rather heavy side, deep double concave, which narrows its focus and funnels out intensely either side of the pin of the Bat tail, giving the design some extra bight, lift and control right off the pod. IMG_0059 MODERN BAT

Perhaps the most Modern aspect of this new Bat is the Bat tail itself. Visually and perhaps not so much functionally, the Bat tail is something out of Star wars and akin to the Stealth fighter more so than the garden variety fruit bat dangling in ones back yard. It was a pain getting my glasser to carbon wrap it, but all in all it has its function and retains its fashion.

PURPOSE
The Modern Bat is an update of the Baby Bat which was then and still is now- a small wave Hybrid capable of great run and now shorter arc and vertical freedom due to its makeover. The fin positions particularly the rears have been strategically placed to facilitate bigger rear fins on bigger days where more drive is required and to be reversed in the small stuff where you need a little more give in the pod. The ideal system for this model is the power base boxes due to their rear fin movement option although this sample does not have them. Anyone who has previously owned or ridden the former Baby Bat will find this thoroughly “Modern Bat” a great leap forward!
